Anger Management Techniques for Healthier, Happier Relationships

Anger Management Techniques for Healthier, Happier Relationships

It seems some people were born knowing good anger management techniques. Many of the rest of us, however, discover that we didn’t learn these skills growing up and it’s taking a toll on our relationships.   Thankfully, it’s never too late to learn good relationship skills, including how to manage our anger.

Feeling angry is perfectly normal, but knowing how to manage it and not let it get out of control is the key to long-lasting relationships.  Try some of the anger management techniques below.

A good place to start is by making an anger management plan.   Include in your plan specific anger management techniques that you can practice and gradually incorporate into your daily life.  Below are some examples.

First, take a step back.    Give yourself time to think about the following questions.   Go for a short walk outside if possible, to give yourself time to think.

Put the situation into perspective by asking yourself if this predicament that is so upsetting right now will matter as much ten years from now.

Second, think about the ramifications of your actions.  Before you react, ask yourself if your reaction is likely to make things better or worse.

By the time you do this, in many cases you will see that your anger has subsided.

Another helpful anger management technique is to use visualization.  Before reacting thoughtlessly, imagine yourself responding in a way that someone you admire might respond: calmly, reasonably, in a mature manner.

Avoid trying to “vent” anger by punching or kicking things and otherwise acting violently.  These practices do not release anger but instead reinforce the feeling of being violently out of control.

We are creatures of habit and whatever we practice becomes second nature, so practice good anger management techniques and witness the difference.

Learning to control anger won’t come over night but with practice it will come.   Hopefully these anger management techniques will start you on the path towards  meeting your court ordered anger management requirements.
